So, I'm here again. I saw this in a friend's note and knew I had to send this letter. It's quick and straight to the point; more like a poem.
Read carefully...
Does this darkness have a name ?
This cruelty, this hatred. How did it find us?
Did it steal into our lives or did we seek it out and embrace it?
What happened to us?
That we now send our children to the war like we send young men to war,
Hoping for their safe return,
But knowing that some will be lost,
Along the way ?
What is this 'darkness' she speaks of?

I'm guessing she means the darkness of uncertainity. The pain of knowing you're going to lose someone but acting like you're in the dark about it.
